Well we needed a fence. Not just any fence but one that will satisfy both the local building code and our community association rules. I liked the rustic charm of a stacked log zigzag fence, my wife preferred the clean cut look of black aluminum fencing - we installed both but that's jumping ahead of the story. First we started checking prices, product and regulations. We set a budget. We had a few firms come over to give price estimates. So far it was easy as a number of websites have high quality estimating tools and great product descriptions / pictures. The install pros would measure distances make a few suggestions and provide a price quote on the spot. Then we took a step back and started over. We need to create a fence that would work in harmony with our pool and the landscape - not just a fortress around a body of water. We had more questions than answers. Here are a few: Where should the fence be installed? Just enclose the pool area (minimum cost) or follow the property line (maximum cost and over budget) How to position the gates to access the pool from the (a) kitchen (b) place kids will be hanging out (c) driveway for guests ... ? What size gates are need for (a) my lawnmower (b) commercial lawnmower (b) equipment to move rocks for the hardscape project ... ? How long until the (a) material arrives (b) work begins (c) work ends? ...
